SECOND ITEM ON THE AGENDA
Report of the Meeting of Experts on Labour Statistics
(Geneva, 14-23 October 1997)
1. In accordance with the decision taken by the Governing Body at its 267th Session (November 1996),(1) and in preparation for the Sixteenth International Conference of Labour Statisticians, to be held in 1998, the Meeting of Experts on Labour Statistics was held in Geneva from 14 to 23 October 1997, chaired by Mr. I. Macredie (Government, Canada) for the first item on the agenda and by Mr. J.B. Coker (Government, Nigeria) for the second. Twenty-six experts were invited to the Meeting: 14 were appointed after consultations with governments, six after consultations with the Employers' group, and six (five actually attended) after consultations with the Workers' group of the Governing Body. The Meeting was also attended by observers from intergovernmental and non-governmental international organizations.
2. The Meeting had the following agenda:
1. Underemployment: Concept and measurement.
2. Income from employment: Concept and measurement.
3. The report of the Meeting is appended.(2)
4. The Committee on Sectoral and Technical Meetings and Related Issues may wish to recommend that the Governing Body take note of the report, in particular the recommendations in paragraphs 48, 49 and 100.
