Report of the Symposium on Multimedia Convergence

(Geneva, 27-29 January 1997)

1. A paper on the above symposium was submitted to the Governing Body at its 268th Session (March 1997) pending preparation of the report.⁽¹⁾ 

2. The purpose of the symposium was to exchange views on the social and labour issues related to multimedia convergence. The report of the symposium, which is appended,⁽²⁾  contains a summary of presentations by participants at panels addressing a wide range of issues arising from the growth of the information society, together with the subsequent discussions. The final chapter of the report summarizes a discussion on the possible future activities of the ILO in the media, cultural and graphical sphere.

3. The Committee on Sectoral and Technical Meetings and Related Issues may wish to recommend that the Governing Body take note of the report and authorize the Director-General to communicate it --

(a) to the governments of member States and, through them, to the employers' and workers' organizations concerned;

(b) to the international employers' and workers' organizations concerned;

(c) to the international organizations concerned.
