Description

In Australia, private and non-profit 'migration agents' can offer assistance to persons wishing to enter or remain in Australia or to people sponsoring prospective visa applicants. All migration agents must be registered and are bound by a Code of Conduct. The Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (MARA) was created to oversee the conduct of migration agents and to provide individuals using agents with information on their rights and registered agents, and a mechanism to submit complaints. The MARA also has the authority to suspend an agent found to have violated the regulations and deny registration to those found to be unsuitable. The Authority's website allows potential migrants and their sponsors to access information concerning average fee ranges and services available as well as to search the Register of Migration Agents. Additionally, the website supplies information to agents on the registration process and requirements, as well as on professional standards and obligations. There were a total of 5,212 registered migration agents in June 2014.
