Domestic work, conditions of work and employment: A legal perspective, Conditions of Work and Employment Series No. 7.

When working conditions of domestic workers are addressed in the media, it is mainly to highlight extreme situations of near-slavery rather than the general situation of the majority of domestic workers. While it is good that such cases be condemned, they do not provide a comprehensive picture of the working conditions and status of domestic workers and, therefore, do not necessarily help to improve the situation of this very vulnerable category of worker. The purpose of this working paper is precisely to shed some light on the working conditions of domestic workers as they are specified by national legislation. This working paper starts by pointing out the main characteristics of domestic work and provides an in-depth national and international comparative legal analysis of the conditions of work and employment of domestic workers. The study thus helps to identify the gaps and the limits of the legal protection provided by national legislation.
