Sub-regional tripartite workshop on wages policies in the Pacific island

Wage setting though minimum wages and collective bargaining agreements presents a number of practical challenges in the Pacific Island countries.

Press release | Pacific Island Countries | 29 October 2013
The International Labour Organisation (ILO) in partnership with the Tripartite Labour Advisory Council (TLAC) of Vanuatu is organising a Sub-regional tripartite workshop on wages policies for the pacific island countries from 29 – 31 October, 2013 at the Grand Hotel & Casino, Port Vila, Vanuatu. The participating countries are Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. Wage setting though minimum wages and collective bargaining agreements presents a number of practical challenges in the Pacific Island countries. This workshop will bring together Worker, Employer and Government representatives from the five countries who are directly involved in collective bargaining and/or minimum wage setting (e.g. as members of tripartite wage boards) to facilitate an exchange on their experiences, and to discuss the principles of sound wage setting institutions found in the relevant ILO standards. The intended outcome is a clearer understanding of how key principles of collective bargaining and minimum wage setting can be combined into effective wage policies in the context of the Pacific, and to initiate a discussion within the tripartite delegations on how this can be implemented at the country-level through the Decent Work Country Programmes (DWCP) that are currently being renewed.
