ILO Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific Yoshiteru Uramoto visits India.

Mr Yoshiteru Uramoto, Assistant Director-General and Regional Director, ILO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, visited New Delhi from 18-20 September 2014 and met with officials of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Ministry of External Affairs and several other Government of India ministries, workers and employers organizations, the United Nations Resident Coordinator, the academic community, donors and other partners.

Mr. Uramoto also delivered the inaugural address at a panel discussion on Regional Cooperation on Employment and Labour Issues in South Asia where he gave a call for South Asian countries to work together to protect the rights of migrant workers. The discussion, organized jointly by the Centre for the Study of Regional Development and the Centre for Informal Sector and Labour Studies, with the ILO, brought together a number of eminent panelists and speakers from India with a large audience from different walks of life, including the student community. The discussion focused on the need for the ILO to highlight the importance of Decent Work and labour market issues within SAARC as well as the criticality for labour to be an integral part of the SAARC agenda.
