  1. Consolidation under Way: Capacity-building Seminar for the CIS Employers' Representatives

    In co-operation with the Manufacturing Association of Israel, the Bureau for Employers’ Activities organized in Israel on 11 - 19 November a seminar for employers' representatives from eight countries of the Community of Independent States: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russian Federation and Uzbekistan.

  2. TSA Project in Kazakhstan Successfully Completed

    We have already informed about the ILO/UNDP project in Kazakhstan entitled “Decent Work: Integrated Approach to Social Sphere in Kazakhstan / Targeted Social Assistance Scheme” (see news for July 2003) and aimed at assessment and improvement of the targeted social assistance scheme (TSA) that has been recently introduced in the country.

    The ILO Subregional Office in Moscow organized a big promotional event around the theme of gender equality, which took place in the Russian State Library and in the House of Journalists in Moscow.

    The CIS Conference "Interaction of the State and Co-operative Organizations in Implementing the ILO Recommendation Concerning the Promotion of Co-operatives" was held in St Petersburg, Palace "Tavrichesky", 29-30 October 2003.

  3. Employers’ Organizations: Ready to Defend Small Business Interests and to Support Women Entrepreneurship

    On 28 – 31 October, employers’ organizations representatives from eight countries - Cambodia, People’s Republic of China, LAO PDR, Mongolia, Vietnam (SRO Bangkok); and Kazakhstan, Russian Federation, Uzbekistan (SRO Moscow) met for an interregional workshop in Singapore. The theme of the workshop was very topical: “Enhancing Competitiveness and Decent Work in Small Enterprises in Transition Economies”.

    On 21-22 of October in Krasnoyarsk the ILO Subregional Moscow Office and the Analytical Centre for Social Partnership Development conducted a regional seminar in the framework of a joint project sponsored by the Norwegian government. The seminar was devoted to the development of employers’ organizations at the regional level and to raising understanding by the public and public administration of the role of voluntary and independent organizations of employers. The meeting was chaired by Marina Moskvina, Director of the Analytical Centre, which is an incorporated part of the Coordinating Council of Employers Unions of Russia (CCEUR).

  6. International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

    In 1992, the UN General Assembly, welcoming the fact that certain NGOs, on the initiative of one of them (the French-based International Movement ATD Fourth World) had, in many States, observed 17 October as World Day for Overcoming Extreme Poverty, declared that date the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (resolution 47/196 of 22 December). The observance aims to promote awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and destitution in all countries - a need that has become a development priority.

  8. Women Changing the World

    This was a title of the tenth international conference organized on 2-3 October 2003 by the St. Petersburg Socio-Economic Institute (Rector Elena Kalinina). It should be noted that this activity was included into the list of official events to mark the 300-th anniversary of St-Petersburg. The ILO Subregional Office was represented at the conference by Pauline Barrett-Reid, Director, Irina Melekh, Gender Focal Point, Rimma Kalinchenko, Programme Officer and Desk Officer for Russia, Alexei Bukharov, IPEC (St-Petersburg) Project Coordinator.
