ILO Director-General Gilbert Houngbo meets with Minister of Labour and Social Affairs of Armenia, Narek Mkrtchyan

Within the framework of his visit to the United Arab Emirates, the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Narek Mkrtchyan, had a meeting with the Director-General of the International Labour Organization, Gilbert Houngbo.

During the meeting, a number of issues related to the implemented and planned reforms in the field of labour and employment were discussed, including the development of the employment strategy, the possible introduction of the institution of alternative resolution of the labour disputes in Armenia and the possible introduction of the unemployment insurance system in the country.

It was noted that the Health and Labour Inspection Body (HLIB), operating under the Government has broadened its mandate in 2021, involving among its functions supervision over the labour legislation. The ILO provides support to the HLIB to strengthen compliance with the ratified Convention No.81.

Minister Mkrtchyan thanked the Director-General for close and effective cooperation. According to the Minister, cooperation with the ILO contributes to strengthening the  protection of the rights of workers and employers, as well as improving the  cooperation amongst social partners.

Gilbert Houngbo agreed with the priorities set by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs,  reaffirming ILO commitment to close cooperation.

Gilbert Houngbo also presented to the Minister his initiative to create a Global Coalition for Social Justice and suggested that Armenia be a part of it. The parties discussed an idea to hold  a conference related to labour and social protection  in Armenia with the participation of the ILO Director-General at the end of the year.
