By Mr Khalid Hassan, Director, ILO Country Office for the Philippines at the ILO 24-Hour Global Tour Manila celebrating 100 years of advancing social justice, promoting decent work, Manila, Philippines, 11 April 2019

Statement | Manila, Philippines | 11 April 2019
I stand here before you looking upon your faces and reactions. I wish I have the time to call each of you by name and to let you know how much the ILO appreciates your support and presence in this historic event.

Thank you so much for celebrating with us this extraordinary anniversary, and spending your precious time with us.

When I say thank you so much, it is not just for today but also for the partnership, which for many of you, have spanned across decades.

As we strive to excel in advancing social justice and promoting decent work, we are honoured to have constituents and partners like you.

The ILO was born in a time of crisis and in a world struggling to rebuild from the ruins of the First World War and the fear that it brought to people.

We are still confronted by challenges as we move to the future of work based on the Global Commission on the Future of Work Report. The future of societies depends on how we deal with these challenges.

The report proposed a human-centred agenda for the future of work with a rights-based and gender-balanced approach. The agenda is based on 10 recommendations focused on investing in people’s capabilities; institutions of work; and decent and sustainable work.

We remain committed to working together and finding solutions to ensure a future that works for all.

We will continue to advance social justice and promote decent work towards universal and lasting peace.

Access to decent work is crucial to create a brighter future and a better world where we all would like to live in.

We cannot do this alone and we count on your continued support. You are the reason why the ILO stands strong at 100 years. We are extremely grateful for the trust and confidence that you have placed in us.

With 100 years of experience behind us, the ILO is positioned to take the lead on creating a future of work, while placing decent work and social justice at its core.

Today, we have come together as one ILO team across four continents to bring you this ILO 24-Hour Global Tour.

I am extremely grateful to all those who made this celebration possible and worked towards its success.

Let me acknowledge our excellent host, performers and talents, and our events team, the people behind the stage and camera.

Most of all let me thank all the ILO staff for the wonderful work done as a team. Expectations and deadlines have been challenging. They have shown strong commitment and dedication not only for this Global Tour, but to the Organization as a whole, and to the service of social justice.

We are very inspired and motivated because we have constituents and partners like you. We thank you sincerely for believing in us and sharing our vision of decent work for all, a key driver to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

Throughout the Centenary year, multiple events and dialogues will happen as the ILO prepares for its second century of work, including a National Dialogue in the Philippines on the Future of Work. This event is only the beginning.

We hope to continue our valuable partnership with you towards a future that works for all.

We look forward to your support and cooperation in the next 100 years of the ILO.

Once again, a big thank you from all of us.

Happy ILO Centenary!
