In celebration of International Women’s Day and National Women's Month, the International Labour Organization in cooperation with the Department of Education, the Embassy of the United States of America and American Spaces held its first Girl Power Forum at the National Science Technology Fair, held on 3 March 2020 in Quezon City.

“We are happy to work with the Department of Education and the Embassy of the United States on promoting among our students the need to invest more on their education and training in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM),” said Khalid Hassan, Director of the ILO Country Office for the Philippines.

Invited to speak at the Girls in Science Forum were Ms Audrey Pe, Founder of Wi-Tech and Ms Michie Ang, founding director of Women Who Code Manila. Moderating the forum was Ms Linartes Viloria, National Project Coordinator of the ILO Women in STEM Workforce Readiness and Development Programme.

“We need more forums like this where girls can see the different possibilities of careers in science. By listening to the stories of the journeys of women in science and technology, they will be inspired to dream for careers in STEM,” said Hassan.

Before the Forum, the students were treated to an exclusive screening of the movie Hidden Figures. Hosted by the Embassy of the United States of America and American Spaces, Hidden Figures is the inspiring story of three African-American women mathematicians at NASA, who helped get the first US astronaut into orbit.

More than 161 student participants from public and private schools across the Philippines participated in the Forum. The Forum is part of the National Science and Technology Fair, organized by the Bureau of Curriculum and Development of the Department of Education.

The Women in STEM Workforce Readiness and Development Programme is a project of the International Labour Organization, with the support of JP Morgan. The programme seeks to provide women with critical soft and technical STEM-related skills, employability and leadership training coupled with targeted mentorship to help women gain quality employment and advancement opportunities in STEM-related jobs.
