    Over 20,000 workers who lost their livelihoods to Typhoon Haiyan were hired under the emergency employment programme to help rebuild their communities within decent and safe working conditions. This approach has been used in countries like Cambodia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Timor Leste to help the vulnerable who suffer the most in crisis and disasters.

The ILO’s most senior official in Asia Pacific visited Tacloban and Basey, two typhoon-hit areas to look at progress and needs on-the-ground.

    The Government of Japan and the ILO have allocated US$500,000 to help support the post-Haiyan response in the Philippines. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan has provided the funds under the ILO/Japan Fund for Building Social Safety Nets in Asia and the Pacific. The fund is to be used to support the recovery from natural disaster.

    ILO says five million workers affected by Typhoon Haiyan

    Roughly a quarter of those employed in the affected areas have got their livelihoods destroyed or disrupted by Typhoon Haiyan. The ILO, along with UN sister agencies, supports the government, employers' and workers' organizations to help workers and their communities.
