ILO and DOLE Coordination Meeting on Super Typhoon Rai (Odette) Response

In the aftermath of Super Typhoon Rai (Odette), the ILO and DOLE had a coordination meeting. As a follow-up, DOLE Secretary Bello requested ILO’s assistance on ground assessment including pre-typhoon situationer for proper intervention.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) Country Office for the Philippines and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) had its coordination meeting on Super Typhoon Rai (Odette) Response. The meeting held on 28 December 2021 highlighted the need for a ground assessment on pre-Odette situationer to provide proper interventions.

The meeting also tackled the concurrent proposal to forge a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen activities on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) and digital entrepreneurship to workers and entrepreneurs in to support micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) including the informal businesses. This is in pursuit of economic and employment recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic under then Japan-funded Bringing Back Jobs Safely.

As a follow-up, DOLE Secretary Silvestre Bello III underscored the importance of profiling and conducting ground assessment. The Mission Rebooting Activities through Community Engagements (RACE) programme of DOLE initially gathered ground assessment that provides a pre-typhoon situationer that may also be considered.

DOLE further sought ILO assistance to provide proper interventions on the ground. All these initiatives according to Secretary Bello will be enrolled in the National Employment Recovery Strategy, which as the Secretary said will greatly contribute to the holistic labour market recovery strategy of the Philippines.
