Government, employers and workers’ organizations, UN and other partners join hands to support decent work for rural workers

Launch of the Project on Improving Workers’ Rights in the Rural Sectors of the Indo-Pacific with a focus on Women

The International Labour Organization (ILO), with support from the United States Department of Labor, held a virtual launch the new project on “ Improving Workers' Rights in the Rural Sectors of the Indo-Pacific with a focus on Women”.

The project aims to promote and improve compliance with labour laws, occupational safety and health (OSH), and gender equality in the rural sectors in agriculture, fishing and mining, in the Philippines; while the project will focus on the rural sector in the palm oil industry in Indonesia. The Project is being implemented as part of the ILO’s Safety + Health for All Flagship Programme to improve safety and health globally.

ILO CO-Manila Khalid Hassan opened the launch with his welcome remarks then it was followed by messages of support from the UN Resident Coordinator in the Philippines Gustavo González, DOLE Secretary Silvestre H. Bello, III, and Acting Chief of Mission Mark Moody of the US Embassy in the Philippines. US DOL Senior Labour Specialist Keith Goddard delivered a message during the closing ceremonies. The second half of the programme was a question and answer forum with key panelists led by DOLE, together with DA, DENR, DTI, and PCW. Representatives from the employers (ECOP) and workers’ organizations (ALLWIES, NACUSIP, ALU-TUCP, FFW) were also in attendance as resource persons. All in all, there were 95 participants were in attendance, including those  from other government agencies, employers and workers’ groups, UN agencies, ADB, World Bank, IETI and other international and national development partners of the project.
