Webinar on Discrimination in the World of Work and How to Prevent it

This webinar aims to raise awareness to HR managers/practitioners about discriminations, by sharing experience, knowledge, and good practices.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected many people. The pandemic is also exposing and deepening existing inequalities, and disproportionately impacting marginalized and vulnerable communities that are, too often, left without access to critical tools and services. Inequalities, fuelled by stigma and discrimination, have obstructed the access to employment for many people, including women, people with disabilities, people living with HIV, compounding the economic hardships those people already faced before the pandemic.

Furthermore, the pandemic has led to increased concern over workplace discrimination, an alarming consequence characterized by wrongful termination or discrimination on account of age, race, disability status, parenthood, company position, health status, and other identifying characteristics. The economic toll of this latest public health crisis has been unprecedented, leaving many workers at a disproportionate risk for financial strain and job loss.

In addition to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on public health and the economy, there is increasing concern about how to best protect the rights of workers during this time and ensure safe and healthy working conditions. Human resource management practices play a particularly important role in making the Indonesian labour market gender equal and inclusive. In fact, decisions and actions of HR professionals could open doors for disadvantaged groups of people to employment and allow them to utilize their skills fully. Building a gender equal, non-discriminative, and inclusive workplaces free from discrimination starts with awareness of HR professionals.

Against this backdrop, the United Nations initiates to implement a project “Employment and Livelihood: An Inclusive Approach to Economic Empowerment of Women & Vulnerable Populations in Indonesia”. The project is funded by the UN Multi-Partner Trust Funds (UN MPTF). Four UN agencies, International Labour Organization (ILO), UN Development Programme (UNDP), Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), and UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) implement the project. This webinar series is one of the activities in the project.
