Meysha Fatmawati, 24 years old from Gresik, East Java, smiled with joy when her animation video was awarded as the first winner of the ILO’s One Minute Video Competition (KOVID) to promote occupational safety and health (OSH) at workplace. She glowed with happiness learning that her video was able to beat hundreds of video entries nationwide and earned her the first prize of Rp 50 million.

We hope through this competition and through this kind of creative participation, we can create a preventive OSH culture in Indonesia as part of our daily lives."

Nia Dinata, a professional film maker as one of the jurors, appraised the quality of the animation and the video storytelling, bringing the voices of market vendors at the traditional market and depicting the impact of the pandemic as well as OSH efforts taken to maintain their businesses.

“The animation is simple, yet it is very precise with a heart-touching narration. The story is closed to our daily life as market vendors are also essential workers that fulfil our basic needs,” Nia said.

When learning about the video competition, together with her team, Meysha decided to focus the story on traditional market vendors. “The story is quite personal for us as a mother of one of our team is a market vendor. It is also our first time joining a video competition and we are so happy to win,” told Meysha, beaming with a smile.

The awarded ceremony and screening of the winning videos were conducted on 3 February, hosted by the ILO through its Enhancing the COVID-19 Prevention at and through Workplaces under the theme “Creating Safe and Healthy Workplace During Pandemic” with a focus on “Realising Indonesia with Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Culture”.

The competition was held for two months from 15 November 2021 to 15 January 2022 and provided two short film-making classes on OSH in early December with more than 300 participants. As a result, the competition received a total of 487 video entries. In addition to Nia Dinata, other jurors included Rector of Jakarta Art Institute, Dr. Indah Tjahjawulan; and film critics and Editor-in-Chief Cinema Poetica Adrian Jonathan Pasaribu.

The second winning video was developed by Ganjar Jatmika Sukanda, a 29-year-old junior high school teacher from Ciamis, West Java. Using comedy and an educational approach, the video underlined the importance of OSH, particularly in school areas, in an entertaining way.

I hope this video can bring happiness and laughter for those who watch it, including my students."

“I find that many videos related to COVID-19 usually left us with sadness or fear. I just want to make a video that is not only educational but also entertaining. I hope this video can bring happiness and laughter for those who watch it, including my students,” Ganjar said, sharing the background of his video.

Applauding the technics used in the video, Nia commented on the natural, smooth comedy shown scene-by-scene. “Everything shown in the video is natural and when viewing this video, as an audience, we can feel how natural the happiness is and it is important during the pandemic.”

Meanwhile, third winning video maker, Belgi Apriliandy from Yogyakarta, created a dynamic video, demonstrating how workers from various types of jobs, particularly young workers, must now prioritize and apply health and safety procedures in every aspect of their working lives.

“This is a dynamic video that is relatable to the lives of young workers. When the video was screened before my filming crews consisting of young workers from film industry, they really appraise this video by saying that the video is the actual portrayal of young workers,” told Nia.

The second and the third winners of the competition were awarded a reward of Rp 20 million and Rp 10 million, respectively. In addition, the competition also awarded 5 popular videos with Rp 1 million each.

“The results of the competition are really exceeded our expectation. We are pleased with the talents shown by the participants and with the knowledge they have about OSH. We hope through this competition and through this kind of creative participation, we can create a preventive OSH culture in Indonesia as part of our daily lives,” concluded Abdul Hakim, ILO’s programme manager for the COVID-19 prevention at workplace project.
