Labour Department to Promote Safety at Workplace in Sindh

Inorder to develop a Joint Action Plan on Workplace Safety and Health, the Government, Employers and Workers Organizations are coming together at a Consultation on "Promoting Workplace Safety & Health in Sindh" , organized by ILO at PC Hotel, Karachi on 6 December 2012

Karachi (ILO News) Sindh Labour Department, jointly with the ILO, Employers Federation of Pakistan (EFP), and Pakistan Workers Federation (PWF) is starting a process to Develop Joint Action Plan on Workplace Safety and Health. As a first step, a high level tri-partite (Government, Employers Organization and Workers Organizations) Consultation “Promoting Workplace Safety and Health and Sindh” is organized on 6 December 2012, at PC Hotel, Karachi.

This consultation will generate recommendations from tri-partite plus stakeholders that will help develop Plan of Action to prevent re-occurrence of factory fires like the unfortunate one in Baldia Town Karachi that killed many workers. This workshop will also help secure a Joint Statement of Commitment from the Employers, Workers, and Government to help ensure safety for the workers at workplace. Following are the three key themes around which the high level tri-partite plus consultation will take place:

Theme-I: Occupational Safety and Health - Legislation and OSH issues

Theme-II: Labour Inspection - Role of Labour Inspection to promote SAFE WORK

Theme-III: Work Injury Insurance Scheme – Existing Social Protection Practices.

The Concluding Session followed by media briefing is scheduled on 06 December 2012 at Marquee, Pearl Continental Hotel, Karachi from 16:00 hrs – 17:00 hrs.

The Chief Minister Sindh, Syed Qaim Ali Shah has kindly agreed to be the Chief Guest at the concluding event. Mr Arif Elahi, Secretary, Sindh labour Department, Mr K. M Nauman, President Employers Federation of Pakistan, Mr Zahoor Awan, General Secretary Pakistan Workers Federation, Mr Francesco d’ Ovidio ILO Country Director Pakistan, will also be present in the workshop.

Participants will also include government officials, and representatives of employers’ and workers’ organizations.
