ILO’s Press Statement on the tragic incident of fire at the shipbreaking facility in Gadani, Pakistan

The ILO Country Office for Pakistan has expressed its deep condolences to the families of the victims of the recent fire at the ship-breaking facility in Gadani.

The ILO extends its heartfelt sympathy to all those affected by the accident and commends the efforts of those involved in rescue operations.

“We stand ready to extend our cooperation to the Federal and Provincial Governments, employers and workers to address the root causes of such accidents in order to prevent them in the future and to be able to save precious lives and assets,” the ILO Office said. “Once again, we would like to express our solidarity with the Pakistani Government, the social partners and the nation.”

The principle of preventing occupational accidents is embedded in a number of adopted ILO Conventions and Recommendations. The ILO has also developed useful tools and guidelines for preventing such accidents, including “Safety and health in shipbreaking. Guidelines for Asian countries and Turkey”, which is available in Urdu as well.
