Concert against child labour

Soprano singer Pilar Jurado supports the ILO's “Music against Child Labour” Initiative

In Madrid, a concert by soprano singer Pilar Jurado, together with the string quartet - David Mata, Lavinia Moraru, María Cámara and Javier Albaré was dedicated to the fight against child labour.

On 4 and 5 December 2013, the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development (AECID) and the ILO Office for Spain organized two activities to celebrate the 25th anniversary of AECID and the 20th anniversary of the ILO’s International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (ILO-IPEC).

On 4 December at the Caja de Música, Palacio de Cibeles, CentroCentro in Madrid , a concert by Spanish soprano Pilar Jurado, together with the string quartet - David Mata, Lavinia Moraru, María Cámara and Javier Albaré was dedicated to the ILO’s “Music against Child Labour” Initiative. Mme Jurado concluded her concert with a rendering of Casta Diva from Bellini’s Norma, one of opera’s best known and loved arias, in which Norma calls for peace across the earth. A recording of the concert will be posted on this webpage in due course.

On 5 December, a workshop "Towards Social Justice for a fair Globalization" took place at the AECID HQ in Madrid, with the participation of several international specialists, government authorities, workers’ and employers’ organizations representatives as well as participants from civil society organizations and the public in general. The panelists presented the latest global estimates on child labour (2000-2012), as well as the latest trends on child labour in the Americas; the results of the IIIrd Global Child Labour Conference, held in October in Brasilia (Brazil); as well as the work and results achieved by IPEC through the child labour projects funded by the AECID in the Americas, Africa and in South East Asia. In addition, several other initiatives against child labour, carried out by UNICEF and some civil society organizations were also shared with the participants.
