Paolo Fresu - Statement of support to the "Music against Child Labour" Initiative

Statement | 05 May 2014
“Piedi” (« Feet »), the theme of the XXVII Festival Time in Jazz, is a reflection on the universal drive to move forward, to reach for fulfillment in life. It is both a tangible image and an aspiration for freedom. It is about the power taking a single step can have in the relationship between man and nature, earth and sky, body and soul. A step, especially when consciously taken, becomes a journey through knowledge and creativity.

Music has always been an extraordinary vehicle for communicating and sharing with others. This creative language can make the world a better place by touching emotional chords in people and inviting reflection on many issues close to our hearts. One such theme is that of stolen childhood both in faraway nations and close-by. Understanding this phenomenon obliges us to gain awareness of the individual and collective responsibilities which perpetuate the exploitation of children. By respecting the law and basic principles of social justice, we can and we must stand up against the logic of profit and indifference that harm the most vulnerable members of society. Productivity must facilitate work that guarantees dignity of individuals and well-being at a social level.

Music can become a journey towards inner freedom. This is why it is so important for the language of music and art to be present in schools and accessible to all children from an early age. The opportunity to learn about sound and to play can provide children with a healthy environment in which to envision a new path for the future.
