Wednesday 15 June 2011, 11:30-13:00 - Geneva, Palais des Nations, Assembly Hall
The ILO Director-General Juan Somavia has invited the Club de Madrid members to join in the ILO’s discussion on a new era of social justice and economic growth based on sustainable development to address mounting “turmoil” in the world of work.
Former heads of state and government from Ecuador, Ghana, Nigeria, Yemen and the Netherlands—members of the “Club de Madrid”—addressed the need for a new era of social justice and sustainable societies in the wake of the global financial and jobs crisis during two special events-panel discussions to be held at the 100th International Labour Conference:
The Club de Madrid is an independent non-profit organization composed of 80 democratic former Presidents and Prime Ministers from different countries, who have come together to respond to a growing demand for support among leaders in two key areas: democratic leadership and governance; and response to crisis and post-crisis situations.
In their “Call to Action for Leadership on Shared Societies,” issued in 2010, Club de Madrid Members said, “We call on all peoples, leaders and organizations to use their spheres of influence to work together to promote and ensure social inclusion and cohesion. We call on them to recognize that achieving social cohesion and creating a world safe from difference is essential for the well-being of individuals, states and the world as a whole.”
