Project context

Between 2010 and 2017, Viet Nam has been showing strong economic growth of around 6 per cent per year on average, which represents one of highest performance at both regional and global levels. In the context of its commitment to the 2030 Agenda, Viet Nam has adopted the National Action Plan for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development in line with the Prime Minister’s Decision No 622/QD-TTg promulgated on 5 October 2017.

In order to better articulate the 2030 Agenda in data initiatives, groundwork has been completed regarding the assessment of the statistical capacity of Viet Nam in relation to the SDG indicators. A roadmap for the development of the SDG statistical indicator system has been proposed by the GSO of the MPI for further consultation and agreement with respective line ministries and constituents at both national and sub national levels.

In this context, the project “Enhancing implementation of SDG Decent Work targets and indicators in Viet Nam” is expected to facilitate multiple partners’ engagement and influence in the SDG related processes, in particular by making progress towards the realisation of SDG8 and other related SDGs that are relevant to Decent Work for Viet Nam. This will be achieved through several interventions on statistics, data generation, communication and awareness raising on labour and employment related SDG targets and indicators.

Project objectives

In line with the Government’s roadmap, the project will specifically:
  • Support the identification, in consultation with constituents (workers’, employers’ organizations and research institutes ) of the list of V-SDG indicators for which the ILO is custodian for which a complete list of V-SDG is expected, by September 2018;
  • Support to build the capacity to produce and analyse those labour related SDG targets and indicators to strengthen Viet Nam’s SDG monitoring and reporting, by December 2019;
  • Support the acceleration, implementation and monitoring of specific labour related SDG targets and indicators, laying the ground for subsequent support to the longer term goals of the 2030 Agenda.

Project outcomes

  • The development of the list of V-SDG indicators that include the SDG indicators for which ILO is custodian;
  • Capacity of national constituents in development, implementation and monitoring of labour and employment related SDG indicators is enhanced;
  • The labour market information system to monitor and evaluate progress made in the labour market is strengthened;
  • The implementation of the National Action Plan of the 2030 Agenda is supported for priority SDG targets and indicators ( in selected areas);
  • Knowledge and awareness on labour and employment related SDG is enhanced for a whole-of-society engagement into the implementation of the SDG and the 2030 Agenda.
