Joint Programme on Green Production and Trade to Increase Income and Employment Opportunities for the Rural Poor

The objective of this project is to develop better integrated, pro-poor, and environmentally sustainable ‘green’ value chains, enabling poor growers, collectors and producers to improve their products and link to more profitable markets. The targeted sector is handicrafts and small scale furniture, focusing on 4 value chains: bamboo and rattan, sericulture; sea grass; lacquer ware; and handmade paper.

Partners

The project is a joint programme with ITC, FAO, UNIDO, UNCTAD and ILO partners includes: MOIT/VIETRADE & VIETCRAFT; the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs; Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Regional focus

The project focuses on 4 provinces: Thanh Hoa; Nghe An; Hoa Binh; and Phu Tho.

Main activities

  • Building the capacity of local service providers to support craft SMEs and household producers;
  • Improving the business management skills and business representation of grassroots crafts and furniture producers; and
  • Strengthening provincial planning capacity for local economic development.

Project outcomes

  • Improved understanding of the handicrafts and small furniture value chains;
  • An environmentally and economically sustainable increase in craft raw material growers’, collectors’ and crafts related rural households’ incomes; and
  • Improved policies and regulatory frameworks at the provincial and national level that meet the needs of rural small enterprises, in particular raw materials and craft producers, processors and traders.
