“Safe and Healthy Generation: Improving Occupational Safety and Health for young workers” Forum

The event is organized on the occasion of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2018, aiming at increasing the attention of the tripartite partners, relevant stakeholders and the public on the importance of improving OSH for youth, taking into account young worker OSH vulnerability.

The forum is organized in Hanoi on 16 April 2018. Around 60 participants being representatives of tripartite partners, young people and youth organizations, members of relevant institutions and academies and international organizations (UN, US Embassy) attend the event to discuss the vulnerability of young people to workplace harm and to celebrate the World Safe Day.

Young workers suffers up to a 40 per cent higher rate of non-fatal occupational injuries than older workers. Many factors contribute to OSH youth vulnerability, such as their physical and psychological stage of development, lack of work experience and training, limited awareness of work-related hazards and a lack of representation when OSH decisions are being discussed at work. This group therefore deserves a degree of special OSH attention and protection from the hazards at workplaces.

Through presentations, dialogue between young participants with tripartite representatives and the introduction of the ILO SafeYouth@Work Action Plan, it is expected that participants better understand the need to address young workers in OSH related policies, regulations and practices in the country.
