HANOI (ILO News) – One hundred factories in the South will set themselves the ambitious target of 100 days without occupational accidents, including small injuries and near misses, on 27 September.

The campaign celebrates the Centenary Year of the International Labour Organization (ILO) by highlighting the links between work safety and productivity in the woodwork and supporting industries in Viet Nam. It will run until end of December and will be accompanied by training and awareness-raising activities that will help companies to improve safety standards so that they can continue to remain accident-free after the campaign ends.

It is organized by the ILO, Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) HCM City, Handicraft and Wood Industry Association of HCM City (HAWA), Binh Duong Furniture Association (BIFA), Binh Dinh Forestry Product Association (FPA) and the HCM City Centre for Supporting Industries Development.

One of the founding principles of the ILO Constitution adopted in 1919 is that workers must be protected from sickness, disease and injury arising from their employment.

In addition to the suffering caused for workers who are victims of occupational accidents and their families, the associated economic costs are colossal for enterprises, countries and the world. The losses in terms of compensation, lost work days, interrupted production, training and reconversion, as well as health-care expenditure, represent around 3.94 per cent of the world’s annual GDP.

The 100days without accident campaign is part of the ILO’s Sustaining Competitive and Responsible Enterprises (SCORE) Programme funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD).
