HANOI (ILO News) – Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA) Dao Ngoc Dung received ILO Country Director Chang-Hee Lee on 13 December, 2018 in Hanoi, reaffirming Viet Nam’s support for ILO Centenary year in 2019 in addition to extending both sides’ cooperation agenda.

On the occasion of its Centenary year in 2019, the ILO in Geneva will release the Future of Work report within January and organize the Centenary International Labour Conference in June where Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and MOLISA Minister Dung would be invited to join with other global leaders.

For Viet Nam, ILO Country Director Chang-Hee Lee proposed organizing the Centenary celebration in May 2019 on the occasion of Ho Chi Minh’s birthday, as there is a close link between the late President and establishment of the ILO in 1919, while suggesting a high-level conference in November 2019 to mark the release of Viet Nam’s Future of Work report.

Minister Dung welcomed such ILO initiatives, emphasizing that MOLISA will join hands with workers’ and employers’ organizations to side with the ILO in celebrating the organization’s milestone, including the joint initiative on future of work.

Both sides also agreed to strengthen their co-operation agenda, specifically in advancing ongoing efforts to ratify the remaining fundamental conventions of the ILO and revise Viet Nam’s Labour Code.

Minister Dung confirmed that the dossier for the ratification of Convention 98 on collective bargaining is well on-track, expecting to be submitted to the National Assembly in May 2019 and necessary preparations to ratify the two technical conventions – Convention 88 on employment services and Convention 159 on vocational rehabilitation and employment for people with disabilities – are underway.

Regarding the Labour Code revision, Minister Dung assured that the important document will also be submitted to the National Assembly in May 2019 as scheduled.

The ILO Viet Nam Director believed that the successful revision of the Labour Code and the ratification of ILO Conventions in 2019 will move the collaboration between Viet Nam and the ILO to a new height.
