Green jobs reduce the environmental impact of enterprises and economic sectors, ultimately to levels that are sustainable. Specifically, but not exclusively, this includes jobs that help to protect ecosystems and biodiversity; reduce energy, materials, and water consumption through high efficiency strategies; de-carbonize the economy; and minimize or altogether avoid generation of all forms of waste and pollution.

Joining the UN Green Jobs Initiative, ILO mandate is to ensure green jobs are decent jobs, that helps reduce poverty while protecting the environment.

In Viet Nam, the ILO is joining forces with other UN agencies and partners to help realize the potential for green jobs and a positive labour market transition in the face of climate change.

Technical support continues to be provided to ILO constituents, including Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Viet Nam General Confederation of Labour, Viet Nam Competition Authority and Ministry of Labour, Invalid and Social Affair to implement ILO tools and training packages for entrepreneurship and enterprise development. These tools and training packages will incorporate gender equality promotion, environmental sustainability and green jobs issues. It is imperative that ILO works with those institutions and other stakeholders to expand relevant business development support services, especially for micro, small and medium enterprises in the framework of the Government One-Million Workers Programme.
