Development of a National Occupational Safety and Health Programme for Zambia

The tripartite participants identified and described the strengths and challenges for OSH in Zambia; identified and analyzed the priorities for action in order to improve the OSH system; and put in place a roadmap that would lead to the development and eventual adoption of a National OSH Programme for Zambia.

Among the strengths in Zambia, were the availability of good OSH legislative and institutional frameworks, the existence of a CIS centre with a training capacity and a tripartite council, among others.

Nevertheless, a national OSH policy is called for and wider coverage of the legislation in addition to further research on OSH were some of the challenges that lay ahead.

Priority was given to the establishment of a national recording and notification system, formulation of sectoral OSH profiles and stronger OSH education programmes in the coming future.

The workshop ended on the adoption of the national OSH profile and establishment of a tripartite-plus technical working group to take these recommendations forward and draft a national OSH programme.
