  1. New ILO's standards will help 21.5 million domestic workers

    The Regional Model Competency Standards (RMCS) for Domestic Work will help more than 20 million domestic worker in Asia and the Pacific if ASEAN regional integration ensures the mutual recognition of skills of workers across borders, according to the ILO's new publication.

    Ending the abuse of domestic workers in Asia

    Although there are more than 52 million domestic workers world-wide, including more than 21 million in Asia Pacific, only a small minority are covered by general labour laws. This lack of protection leaves them vulnerable to – sometimes terrible – abuse and exploitation. Journalist Karen Emmons has been working with the photographer Steve McCurry on a documentary project, “No one should work this way,” to record and expose some of the abuses faced by Asian migrant domestic workers.

    A day in the life of a migrant worker

    To mark International Migrants Day on December 18, the ILO Regional Office for Arab States’ Migration and Governance Network (MAGNET) has teamed up with photographers Leila Alaoui and Nadia Bseiso to follow non-Arab migrant workers in the Middle East who spend their limited time off making a difference in their communities. The images, from Lebanon and Jordan, shed light on how these migrant workers cook, compete, worship, organize and learn from each other to better their lives and lobby for their rights.
