Migrant tragedies highlight need for policy shift, says ILO chief

ILO Director-General Guy Ryder has said the recent deaths of hundreds of migrants seeking to reach Europe highlight the urgent need for a major shift in migrant policy. He spoke at meeting in Geneva of government, workers’ and employers’ representatives.

The ILO Director-General, Guy Ryder, was a panellist on Roundtable 4 on international and regional labour mobility and its impact on development where he delivered a statement drawing attention to the three inter-connected pillars of labour mobility needed to achieve equitable and inclusive development: (i) ensuring that labour mobility addresses real labour market needs; (ii) improving protection of human rights, including labour rights, of migrant workers throughout the whole migration process; and (iii) enhancing social dialogue, collaboration with other stakeholders, and cooperation between countries.
