ILO training keeps Fiji green and clean

April 28th is observed globally as World Day for Safety and Health at Work. Waste collectors in Fiji have reason to celebrate this day, because, thanks to a new ILO programme combining ‘green’ environmental support measures with occupational safety and health (OSH) practices, they are enjoying better, safer and greener working conditions. World Water Day (22 March 2011) - Bringing safe water to communities: the role of the ILO

Despite the UN General Assembly declaring that access to safe water is a human right, thousands die each day because of water-related diseases, and many countries are not expected to meet the UN Millennium Development Goals on water. The ILO is working with governments, employers’ and workers’ organizations to identify priorities for investment infrastructure in order to create employment opportunities and bring safe water to communities. In advance of World Water Day on 22 March, ILO Online spoke with Carlos R. Carrión-Crespo, ILO Sectoral Specialist for Public Services and Utilities.

ILO welcomes new UNEP report on green economy

The International Labour Organization (ILO) has welcomed a new Green Economy Report by the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) entitled ‘Towards a Green Economy: Pathways to Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication’. The report outlines the policy choices, urgent actions and investments needed for a global ‘Green Economy’ – one that is low-carbon, resource-efficient and socially-inclusive.

Youth join green jobs push in China

Yang Shumbo, a Chinese electronic sciences student invented a device to save electricity. He developed this into a business under a pilot project of the Greener Business Option (GBO), an ILO Green Jobs Programme initiative. GBO aims to encourage entrepreneurship in green businesses among young people. Cancun Agreement: ILO highlights call for a “Just Transition” with green jobs and decent work

The ILO praised the 16th Conference of Parties (COP16) on climate change for including social and decent work dimensions in the outcome document, signaling broad recognition for a “just transition” to a low-carbon economy with decent work and greener jobs.
