    UN Women Executive Director, Michelle Bachelet, addressed the Committee on Domestic Workers during the 100th International Labour Conference, saying that the issue of decent work for domestic workers - most of whom are women - was of particular concern to UN Women and its priority of promoting women's economic empowerment. She pledged her agency's support for the ILO towards creating an international standard for domestic workers.

    UN Women and ILO join forces to promote women’s empowerment in the workplace

    The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN-Women) signed a wide-ranging Memorandum of Understanding with the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Geneva, Monday 13 June, on key issues including promoting gender equality, eliminating sex discrimination, protecting domestic workers, promoting social protection floors and combating gender-based violence at work.

    Domestic workers play an important role in the economy and they allow others to go out and earn money. Yet they remain invisible, unprotected and their contribution is often not recognized.     European Parliament adopts a resolution on the proposed ILO Convention and Recommendation on domestic workers

    The European Parliament held a discussion on domestic work on 11 May 2011 and adopted a resolution on the Proposed ILO Convention and Recommendation on domestic workers on 12 May 2011. The text of the resolution is available at the European Parliament’s website.

    On the Horizon: An International Labour Standard for Domestic Workers

    The June 2010 session of the International Labour Conference held a first discussion on a new international labour standard for domestic workers. ILO TV interviews Manuela Tomei, Director of the ILO's Conditions of Work and Employment Programme about the need to protect the working rights of domestic workers. Delegates will vote on this new labour standard at the 100th International Labour Conference in June 2011.
