Fostering an enabling environment for wage employment

To achieve equal opportunities for persons with disabilities for wage employment it is essential to create and strengthen conducive legislative and policy environments.

The implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is leading many countries to implement or strengthen their disability-specific anti-discrimination legislation, covering also the areas of employment and vocational education and training.

Disability benefits need to be designed in a way which enables persons with disabilities to find and stay in employment.

The barriers encountered by persons with disabilities in other areas of society, including education and transport, also have a huge impact on their employment opportunities and thus need to be addressed as well.
