Mr Dong Il Choi, Technical Specialist at ILO COOP/SSE conducted a mission to Korea from March 7 to 24 for a series of meetings with Korean government institutions, universities, and cooperative partners.

The mission sought partnership around the implementation of the ILO’s seven year office-wide strategy and action plan on decent work and the social and solidarity economy 2023-29 approved by GB in November 2022 as well as collaborating with Korean partners for an initiative on statistics of cooperatives funded by the Korean government.

Mr Choi visited federations of agricultural cooperatives, fishery cooperatives and community credit cooperatives for collaboration with the ILO. He also met with several universities that have advanced degree programs on cooperatives and the social and solidarity economy that are interested in working at the global level. He shared highlights of the ILO’s work around the Social and Solidarity Economy and explored areas of collaboration. Partners interested in the potential areas of collaboration and committed to follow-up in the coming months.

Mr Choi attended the 4th and final National Advisory Committee meeting on statistics of cooperatives where the findings and recommendations of the Korean case study on statistics of cooperatives were discussed. He visited the Busan city government and had meetings with the Assistant Mayor and the SSE team to prepare for the ILO’s international conference on statistics of cooperatives that will take place on June 30th in Busan, Korea showcasing all five country case studies and discussing the future plans in advancing the statistics of the SSE in addition to statistics of cooperatives.

This mission provided the ILO with the opportunity to explore more partnerships in advancing the implementation of the ILO’s strategy and action plan on decent work and the SSE. It also served toward reinforcing the collaboration with Korean stakeholders on the cooperative statistics initiative. ILO will hold a follow mission to Korea in May to enhance the cooperation and to better plan for the following events in June-July in Korea.
