ILO presented at a public hearing in the European Parliament on the role of the social economy in shaping the future of work

“The SSE presents itself as a viable solution to recent crises”, said Vic Van Vuuren, Director of the ILO Enterprises Department, at a public hearing on the role of the social economy in shaping the future of work organized at the European Parliament.

The European Parliament’s Social Economy Intergroup, in collaboration with Social Economy Europe, held a public hearing on the role of the social economy in shaping the future of work on 31st January at the European Parliament. The public hearing aimed at discussing ways that the social economy can contribute toward shaping a fairer future of work, in the current context of accelerating transformations in the world of work.

In addition to Vic Van Vuuren, Director of the Enterprises Department at the ILO, the speakers at the public hearing included: Nicolas Schmit, Minister for Labour, Employment and Social and Solidarity Economy from Luxembourg; Tadej Slapnik, State Secretary in the office of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia; Baudouin Baudru, Expert at the cabinet of Commissioner Thyssen, responsible for social economy policies; Juan Antonio Pedreño, President of Social Economy Europe, and Giuseppe Guerini, President of CECOP-CICOPA Europe. The event was presented and moderated by Elena Gentile, Member of the European Parliament (Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats), and Ramón Luis Valcárcel, Vice-President of the European Parliament (European People's Party). Patrick Develtere, Principal Adviser on European Social Policy at the European Political Strategy Centre (EPSC) provided closing conclusions to the public hearing.

The Director of the ILO Enterprises Department highlighted the relevance of the Social Solidarity Economy (SSE) in the Future of Work and said, “The SSE presents itself as a viable solution to recent crises and offers alternative and complementary models of production, that when genuinely used, put the economy at the service of people and planet.”
