The National Festival was held on 31 August 2019 with the participation of the 1st Vice-President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Minister of Cooperatives, Labour and Social Welfare, representatives from cooperative organizations, and a group of successful cooperators. Certificates of appreciation and the special trophies were awarded to 27 leading and thriving cooperatives that have achieved the highest ratings in their relevant technical fields during the event.

Among the 27 top cooperatives, a cooperative was nominated as a “Green Cooperative” (environment supporter) and another cooperative as “National Cooperative Ambassador” (self-motivated cooperative promoter in the society).

Some 21,000 Iranian cooperatives participated in the competition of the National Festival under the mantra “Cooperatives for Decent Work”, which was the theme for the 2019 International Day of Cooperatives. The key selection criteria included: having at least three years of record; having positive financial performance; producing high quality products and services; having a good reputation and brand name; compliance with sustainable development principles; adherence to social responsibility and the international cooperative principles; and generating employment.

The ILO Cooperative Unit Manager Ms. Simel Esim contributed to the event through a video message. She highlighted the four major forces that are transforming the world of work (globalization, demographic changes, technological innovation, and climate change) and introduced examples of cooperative responses to advance decent work and sustainable development in the changing world of work. She also emphasized the importance of an enabling environment for cooperatives to flourish, including laws and regulations, financial support mechanisms and education and training curricula on cooperative enterprises.
