Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China joins efforts to protect seafarers’ rights

News | 21 August 2018
On 6 August 2018, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China deposited with the International Labour Office (ILO) the declaration of application of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, as amended (MLC, 2006) to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China (Hong Kong SAR). The MLC, 2006 will become applicable to Hong Kong SAR on 20 December 2018.

The application of the MLC, 2006 to Hong Kong SAR is of particular importance given that the total merchant fleet registered under its flag is among the most important worldwide, representing more than 113 million gross tonnage (GT). Hong Kong is also one of the largest ports in the world in terms of total cargo and container volume. The application of the MLC, 2006 to Hong Kong SAR marks therefore another crucial milestone to ensure increased protection for numerous seafarers and provide a universal level playing field for shipowners.
