The core of this thought-provoking book consists of 11 monographs from trade union confederations in eight industrialized countries – Australia, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States. It analyses the changes which unions must undergo in adjusting to new economic, technological, and social conditions. It discusses unions’ internal structures and strategies, including improving efficiency, cooperation with other groups, research, special services, training and public relations. The book also examines the effects on union influence and membership of an increasingly diverse workforce and of changing attitudes towards work.
