    Presentation of the ILO-Global Compact Child Labour Platform

    A special event during this week’s UN Global Compact Leaders Summit in New York will offer companies and other stakeholders the opportunity to learn more about the Child Labour Platform (CLP). The CLP - a joint initiative by the ILO, the International Trade Union Confederation, the International Organization of Employers and the UNGC - identifies obstacles to the implementation of ILO Conventions in supply chains and the surrounding communities, as well as solutions to these obstacles and ways to catalyse collective action. Benjamin Smith, the ILO-IPEC’s Senior Officer for Corporative Social Responsibility, explains why CLP’s tools are a winning solution for businesses, working families and communities to address child labour.

    A Tripartite Meeting of Experts will be held to serve as part of the preparatory work for the standard-setting item placed on the agenda of the 103rd Session (June 2014) of the International Labour Conference on facilitating transitions from the informal to the formal economy with a view to the elaboration of a Recommendation.

  7. AUC-AfDB-ECA-ILO signed a Declaration of Intent to boost Youth Employment in Africa

    The International Labour Organization (ILO), the African Union Commission (AUC), the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the Africa Development Bank (AfDB) signed a Declaration of Intent to jointly develop African solutions to the youth employment crisis, including the implementation of a regional inter-agency job creation initiative for 2013-2015 in partnership with African Union Member States.

  8. ILO Presentation at the GFMD Second Thematic Meeting on "Recruitment, labour migration and diaspora: Improving labour market complementarities and economic development outcomes",

    The Second Thematic Meeting of the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) was held at the ILO in Geneva on 11 September 2013. The meeting addressed "Recruitment, labour migration and diaspora: Improving labour market complementarities and economic development outcomes". ILO's Director of the Conditions of Work and Equality Department, Ms. Manuela Tomei presented critical analysis and recommendations on improving development outcomes in her presentation "Labour migration, recruitment and skills recognition and certification: how to maximize outcomes for migrant workers as well as countries of origin and destination?" Ms.Tomei considered three themes: (1) How to improve responsiveness of migration policies and systems to meet genuine labour market needs; (2) How to enhance transparency and fairness in recruitment for better job-worker matching and better outcomes for migrant workers; and (3) How to best assess potential for skills recognition and standards across countries in order to overcome obstacles to labour market integration.

  9. Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Meeting on "Migration and human rights: towards the 2013 High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development", 4 September 2013

    This high-level meeting was organized by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and coincided with the launch of the OHCHR report on Migration and Human Rights: Improving Human Rights-Based Governance of International Migration, which was prepared in response to a decision of the UN Secretary-General's Policy Committee in December 2012.
