Book Launch: Transforming Economies, Making industrial policy work for growth, jobs and development.

The new ILO-UNCTAD publication will be introduced by the ILO Director-General and UNCTAD Secretary-General on Wednesday 4 June at 13:00 in Room II of the ILO. The opening will be followed by presentations from the editors and a question and answer session.

Transforming Economies, Making industrial policy work for growth, jobs and development argues that industrial policy goes beyond targeting preferred economic activities, sectors and technologies.

It contains analyses of national and sectoral experiences in Costa Rica, the Republic of Korea, India, Brazil, China, South Africa, sub-Saharan Africa and the United States. Practical lessons and fundamental principles for industrial policy design and implementation are distilled from the country case studies. Given the fact that many countries today engage in industrial policy, this collection of contributions on theory and practice can be helpful to policy-makers and practitioners in making industrial policy work for growth, jobs and development.

Development strategy must strive to make growth more inclusive, says ILO Chief

ILO Director-General Guy Ryder and UNCTAD's Secretary General Mukhisa Kituyi launch a joint ILO-UNCTAD publication, titled "Transforming Economies: Making industrial policy work for growth, jobs and development". The book presents 8 case studies of countries across the development spectrum, from sub-Saharan Africa to the United States, and shows that development plays a key role in promoting economically and socially inclusive growth.

The launch at 13:00 on Wednesday 4 June in Room II of the ILO, chaired by ILO Regional Director for Africa, Aeneas Chapinga Chuma, will feature opening remarks by ILO Director-General Guy Ryder and UNCTAD Secretary-General Mukhisa Kituyi, followed by short presentations from the editors, ILO ADG for Policy, José M. Salazar-Xirinachs, ILO Senior Economist, Irmgard Nübler and Head of UNCTAD’s Unit on Economic Integration, Richard Kozul-Wright. These will be followed by a question and answer session and discussion.
