Changing labour market transitions in Asia and the Pacific
The workshop will focus on the realities of Asian societies in terms of ongoing changes in labour market transitions and, more generally, over the life course.
- Within the framework of the project’s fact-based analysis component on the future of work topic “new labour market transition patterns”, this virtual regional workshop will serve as a follow-up to the first global technical workshop organized jointly by the ILO and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in May 2021.
The workshop will focus on the realities of Asian societies in terms of ongoing changes in labour market transitions and, more generally, over the life course. It is open to all and has as its overall objective to exchange knowledge and build capacity on policy design for managing transitions in the region.
Objectives:
1) take stock of existing methodological approaches to measuring labour market transitions and have an idea of available data sources in the region;
2) showcase innovative research results relevant to the region;
3) expand and strengthen a network of researchers;
4) assess the interest for evidence building and policy-oriented research among regional stakeholders; and,
5) seek opportunities for future research initiatives.
The workshop will involve an exchange of innovative research on the following topics:
- transitions into/out of informality
- a gender perspective on transitions
- youth transitions
- transitions and ageing societies
- impacts of the crisis on transitions
- changing patterns in job-to-job transitions
- methodologies to measure transitions and life-courses
- a gender perspective on transitions
- youth transitions

Participants
Invited speakers include researchers and experts who have strong publishing record on the above-mentioned topics and work for the ILO and other international organizations, universities and think tanks in the region. The workshop aims to cover the following countries: Australia, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Korea, New Zealand, Thailand, and Viet Nam.
Workshop participants include representatives from employers’ and workers’ organizations, governments (ministries and national statistical offices), other international organizations, researchers and civil societies within the region.
An interactive dialogue with participants through questions and answers in each session is planned.
