After finishing a Bachelor of Sciences degree in El Monofia and gathering some work experience in a lab for medical diagnosis, Mora decided to pursuit her dream: opening her own medical lab.

Participating in the SIYB programme was the push that Mora’s career needed. Her dream became reality after finalizing the Start Your Business module. The programme allowed her to develop a concrete business plan and to be prepared for loan applications.

Mora started her company during the COVID-19 pandemic. On the one hand, this meant many challenges in establishing and managing her business; on the other, it presented a valuable opportunity to build community awareness regarding health protection.

According to Mora, the support she received from her trainer in the follow-up sessions were key to the success of her business. From the training she learned fundamental lessons on how to manage the lab, segment the market, perform market research, calculate costs, and develop cash flows.

As a woman, managing a medical lab in a rural community is particularly challenging. It requires working with doctors, building institutional relations with hospitals and private clinics centres in her own city and surroundings villages. Nevertheless, Mora has been able to grow her business successfully.

All of the skills that I learned from SIYB enabled me to succeed in managing my lab towards fulfilling everything a high-quality health service requires."
