    Amends sections 3B-1 (defines "time account" which allows for a combination of parental benefits and partial resumption of work), 3B-2 paras 1-2 (possible methods of combining work and benefits), 3B-3 (partial resumption of work also available for part-time employees), 3B-5 and 3B-6 (applicability in relation to adoption benefits).

    Provides for rules to protect seafaring employees who are pregnant, recently have given birth, who are breast feeding or who have children. Details the right to paid leave for medical check ups, delivery and care of child including, in certain conditions, the right to free transport to Norway. The total parental leave entitlement is one year. Repeals Provisions (No. 234 of 1986) on the same subject.

    Provides that where the mother has received a maternity allowance for the first six weeks after birth, the father is entitled to an allowance for the remaining period if the mother returns to work, begins full-time education, or is hospitalised or not able to care for the child because of illness, and is dependent on the father for help. Provides that when an adoptive parent who receives an allowance is hospitalised or not able to care for the child because of illness, the other adoptive parent is entitled to benefits during the rest of the allowance period.

Consequential amendments to the Annual Leave Act (No. 21 of 1988).
