The Letter of Intent regarding a more inclusive working life (the IA Agreement) is based on a tradition of cooperation and trust between the authorities, employees and employers in Norway, both centrally and locally. The Agreement is based on a shared acknowledgement that activity through work promotes good health and that early implementation of active measures could prevent withdrawal from work.

Provides for rules concerning employers' responsibility regularly to evaluate possible reproductive hazards at working places, to make arrangements to limit such risks, including providing personal protective outfits, to inform employees of the existence of any such risks, and to transfer employees at risk. Implements provisions in the EEA agreement (Community Directive 92/85/EG).

Provisions to amend the Provisions (No. 870 of 1992) respecting workers' protection and the working environment in the petroleum industry (No. 637 of 1995).

Amends s. 14, subsections 1 and 4, s. 17 and 21 and s. 22, subsection 22. The amendments include exemptions for the petroleum industry from the applicability of certain sections of the Act respecting workers' protection and the working environment, inter alia, with respect to hours of work. Trade unions may enter agreements concerning hours of work beyond the limits of s. 41 subsection 5 of the Act respecting worker's environment etc.. Further, instead of rules otherwise applicable, the total (daily) working time, including overtime, must not exceed 16 hours, and the total annual overtime must not exceed 200 hours. At working places bound by wage agreements, special agreements with individual workers are permitted to extend the possible amount of annual overtime to 300 hours.

Provides for rules to protect seafaring employees who are pregnant, recently have given birth, who are breast feeding or who have children. Details the right to paid leave for medical check ups, delivery and care of child including, in certain conditions, the right to free transport to Norway. The total parental leave entitlement is one year. Repeals Provisions (No. 234 of 1986) on the same subject.

The Act provides for 25 working days of paid annual leave per year (increased for workers over age 60). It defines the scope of application (s. 1) and lays down rules governing the accrual, remuneration and forfeiture of leave and co-ordination of annual leave with other types of leave. It repeals the Annual Leave Act (No. 3 of 1947) (LS 1947 - Nor. 1).
