Comprised of 172 sections concerning fundamental rights, the executive, legislature and the judiciary. Provides for freedom of thought, conscience and religion. Discrimination on the basis of race, religion, language, caste, sex, and political opinion is prohibited. Grants freedom of speech and expression, peaceful assembly, and freedom of association including the right to form and join a trade union, subject to "such restrictions as may be prescribed by law in the interests of racial and religious harmony or national economy". In a similar vein, all freedoms with the exception of freedom from torture and freedom of thought, conscience and religion, are subject to "such prescriptions as may be prescribed by law in the interests of national security, public order and the protection of public health and morality, or for the purpose of securing due recognition and respect for the rights and freedoms of others, or of meeting the just requirements of the general welfare of a decmocratic society".
