Abstract/Citation: The new Consultative Council is the first institution of its kind in Bahrain. Its role is to examine - and submit views on - draft legislation, state policy, matters relating to public services, economic development and any other matters referred to it by the Council of Ministers. At the request of at least ten of its members, the Consultative Council may also propose draft legislation or submit petitions. The Council's views are to be set out in the form of recommendations to the Council of Ministers. Its 30 members were appointed by Decree of the Amir on 27 December 1992, for a renewable term of four years; its first meeting was held on 16 January 1993. All meetings are formally called by the Amir.
