This Bill, which became the Land Acquisition Act of 1992, was designed to provide a statutory framework for the acquisition of private lands. It allows the President to compulsorily acquire any land in the interest of defence, public safety, public order, public morality, public health, town and country planning or for a "purpose beneficial to the public generally or to any section of the public." It allows the President to acquire rural land for purposes which include agricultural settlement and the relocation of dispossessed persons. It repeals and replaces the Land Acquisition Act, 1985 (No. 21 of 1985)
