Skilling the workforce Labour migration and skills recognition and certification in Bangladesh

This report provides a survey of the institutional arrangement in respect of technical and vocational skills in Bangladesh as well as brings out the variety of factors recognized to influence preparation of the workers for overseas employment.

Bangladesh is one of the largest human resource-rich countries meeting the demands of labour in the international market. It is estimated that between 1976 and 2012 approximately 8,307,749 workers left their home country to work in over 157 countries worldwide. Bangladeshi workers employed overseas contribute an equivalent of 13 per cent of GDP through their remittances. Given such significance of overseas employment, issues of technical and vocational skills and life-skills of the workers are gradually gaining strength in the country.
