Entrepreneurship training for youth in Ukraine

The ILO project aims to create a more enabling environment for job creation for youth in Ukraine through providing entrepreneurship trainings.

With the outbreak of the war in Ukraine in February 2022, many businesses had to cease operations. This led to a big loss in jobs for people throughout the country. According to IOM data, 4.2 million Ukrainians have fled to neighbouring countries, and around 7.1 million people moved to another region within the country. Many of these internally displaced persons (IDPs) are looking for jobs in their new location. Entrepreneurship can be one way of self-employment for them. The establishment of mechanisms that encourage both self-employment and entrepreneurship can increase employment and improve the overall economic outlook. In the European Union (EU), self-employment as well as entrepreneurship are major driving factors in job creation. Small and medium-sized enterprises account for 99 per cent of all enterprises in the EU.

The ILO’s project on youth employment aims to create a more enabling environment for job creation for youth in Ukraine through providing entrepreneurship training. The training is digitized and specially tailored to youth between 18 to 24 years of age. So far, the project has trained 97 teachers of TVET institutions, representatives of the State Employment Services and nongovernmental organizations. They in turn have guided almost 800 young people on setting up a business, using the ILO’s methodology. Trainers continue to provide guidance, even under the very difficult circumstances.

The trainers were trained in the ILO’s “Biz-Up - Self-employment skills for young people” methodology which enables counsellors and facilitators to form young people’s entrepreneurial skills. The Biz-Up methodology has been used effectively since 2007 in several countries. It is a step-by-step guidance to enhance young people’s understanding of self-employment through explaining the basic concepts related to setting up an enterprise.
