    ILO advises Ukraine not to move forward with pension privatization

    ILO News talked to Fabio Duran-Valverde, Head of the Public Finance, Actuarial and Statistics Unit, Social Protection Department, ILO Geneva, and Kenichi Hirose, Senior Social Protection Specialist, ILO-Budapest, about the global and regional trends of pension reform and the current proposal to introduce a mandatory funded pension tier based on individual accounts in Ukraine.

  3. Sub-regional network of Labour Dispute Agencies meet in Serbia

    An average of approx. 3,000 cases are handled every year by Alternative Dispute Resolution Agencies in Western Balkans, with a settlement rate of approx. 70 %. The vast majority are individual disputes related to dismissal and non-payment of wages. The ILO organized the third Annual Meeting of the Eastern European network of these agencies on 4-6 July, 2018 in Arandjelovac, Serbia exchanging on how to further scale up these services.

    Bulgaria goes for ILO Minimum Wage Convention

    Bulgaria recently ratified the ILO Minimum Wage Fixing Convention. With signing this document Bulgaria commits to establish a system of fixing and adjusting minimum wages. The overall objective is to improve standards of living in the country which lost almost a fourth of its population in the last two decades due to outward labour migration.

    Making social dialogue work at the factory floor in the Bulgarian textile industry

    With support of the ILO, three global brands from the garment industry and their Bulgarian suppliers recently met placing fundamental rights at work at the center of their sustainability strategies while also making a clear business case for this approach. Participants of the workshop held at the end of March in Sofia concluded that the low level of wages in the garment industy was part of a more complex situation to be further addressed, along with skills mismatches and the difficulty to attract young workers for the industry.

    The ILO's World Employment and Social Outlook: Trends 2018 takes stock of the current global labour market situation. The report launched during the recent annual meeting of the World Economic Forum raises concerns about the ability of the global economy to generate sufficient jobs. For Central and Eastern Europe the report states that the rebound of economic growth does not lead to major employment increase.
