Powerful alliances building a better future for women across the world

An interactive discussion on how UN Women, ILO and the European Union have advanced gender equality and empowered women in Asia, Europe, G7 and Latin America.

The COVID-19 pandemic has threatened hard won gains on gender equality. Pre-existing inequalities in social, economic and political systems have been exposed and further deepened. Now more than ever we need multi-stakeholder partnership to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment in the workplace, marketplace and community.

This demands strong government action for gender-responsive laws and policies, a committed and forceful private sector operationalizing them and a vibrant civil society. This is the vision from which the three EU-funded programmes, WE EMPOWER-G7, WeEmpowerAsia and Win-Win in Latin America and the Caribbean, were established over three years ago.
In 2018, UN Women joined forces with the European Union and the ILO to promote sustainable, inclusive, and equitable economic growth in these three regions. Our multi-stakeholder approach has actively engaged the private sector, contributed to the G7 gender equality agenda, and built collaboration with civil society organizations.

As the programmes are ending, this event offers an opportunity to present the key highlights, results, resources, and tools as well as reflecting on key areas for further innovative action.

The event is divided into three sessions. The first session, with opening remarks by Vic Van Vuuren, Director of the Enterprise Department of the ILO, will focus on responsible business conduct that advances gender equality and women’s economic empowerment. In the second session different testimonials from women entrepreneurs and women-led businesses will be shared. In the last session that will focus on driving progress on gender equality through gender lens investments, Chidi King, Chief of the Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Branch (GEDI) of the ILO will provide closing remarks.
